Segment 1 — Welcome
This is the eight-hour orientation Utah requires before the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division, MVED, will process a new dealer license application. Your certificate from this course goes into your application packet, and every owner named on the application needs one.
Segment 2 — What a returned packet costs
One applicant's bond was written before the final business address was set, so it showed no business address at all. The bond agent corrected it. But on the day of the MVED visit, the applicant brought an old printout from before the correction. MVED checks the bond's name and address exactly against every other document in your packet, and the packet went home.
Every packet gets checked two ways. Does each document match the others, and is anything missing? Both kinds of mistakes cost the same thing: a second trip to MVED. Most of Module 1 is about passing both checks on the first trip.
Segment 3 — How this course works
The course has five modules. Module 1 is getting licensed. Module 2 is the forms and records MVED expects on every deal. Module 3 is dealer ethics, trade-ins, consignments, and advertising. Module 4 is the federal rules that apply on top of Utah's. Module 5 walks one used-vehicle deal from purchase to sale. Modules 1 to 4 each end with a short quiz, and a final exam closes the course. The exam rules and the course disclaimer are on your screen. In short, this course is general education, not legal advice, and fees, bond amounts, and insurance minimums change, so confirm a figure is current before you rely on it. Unit 02 is license types and fees, and which license fits the business you plan to open.
